Limestone Applications

Considered as a calcareous sedimentary rock , limestone is composed of the mineral calcite (CaCO3), which upon calcination yields lime (CaO) for commercial use. Having the same chemical properties the crystalline equivalents of limestone are calcite and aragonite. The rock containing more than 95% of calcium carbonate is termed high-calcium limestone. Called as marble recrystallized limestone takes good polish and is used decorative and building purposes.

Limestone is quarried for roadbeds, building and landscape construction. Limestone used in manufacturing of cement is especially popular in architecture and many landmarks around the world, especially in North America and Europe. Limestone is readily available and relatively easy to cut into blocks or more elaborate carving.
